THE PAST
Johnson was built in
1948. It was named for Mrs. Nunnally Johnson, who for many years was a member of
the city school board. It was located in a grove of pines on a
site of 16 acres facing Woodlawn Avenue. Special modern features
included venetian blinds, fluorescent lighting, salt glazed bricks for
wainscot in halls, green chalk boards, hot and cold running water in
each classroom, movable desks
and chairs finished in natural wood color, health clinic, community
library, and special workroom and bookroom for teachers. Johnson was
deemed the "last word" in elementary schools.
